Student financial aid workshops 2019

The University of Hawai’i Maui Financial Aid Office is here to support your efforts and it’s never too early to start. They offer a series of informative workshops on the topic of financial aid, scholarships and education funding with the Educational Opportunity Center (EOC).

The first FAFSA workshop took place on September 10, 2019. If you don’t know what FAFSA is, listen! The FAFSA is the Free Federal Student Aid Application, which is very important to complete as there may be financial aid opportunities that you are not aware of. The FAFSA app opens October 1, 2019 for fall 2020. If you need help and have questions, make an appointment with Financial Aid or attend these workshops.

Another financial aid option is UH Common scholarships. The workshops prepare students for the “scholarship season”. On October 8, 9, 15 and 16, there are workshops to help you leave a personal statement for the UH Common App. The required essay is 900 words maximum, or approximately two pages. This can include education and career goals, current employment, accomplishments, honors or awards, and your personal background. You may also want to include special situations in your life, challenges you are facing due to your current financial situation, or any obstacles to reaching your education goals. If you are unsure of what to include, the workshop facilitators can make suggestions.

The subject of October 22sd and 23rd workshops is on how to request letters of recommendations and references. There will be advice on how best to request recommendations. November 5, 6 and 7e, workshops will be presented to help you submit your joint application to the UH system. Again, you may need to bring some information, such as transcripts, reference letters, and the required personal essay.

These workshops only encourage a small step each week to complete all applications on time – nothing like smooth navigation! It’s worth taking the time to attend a workshop and apply, and if you can’t make it to the workshop, make an appointment with the financial aid. Let UH Maui support you on your flight to your dreams. Reserve your space today!
