Undergraduate Student Steps to Apply

(Accelerated Bachelor of Science in Nursing, RN-BSN and Health Care Studies programs)

The financial aid office only processes Direct Student Loans, Pell and SEOG Grants, Scholarship and State Grants (i.e. Life and Palmetto Fellows, SC Need Based Grant).

Students working on a second bachelor’s degree are limited to direct loans and work studies.

All merit aid such as scholarships are awarded by the different university departments. Contact your college or department directly for more information on these programs.

To apply for a student loan:

  1. Review your attendance fees. Determine how much you will need for the school year. You can request a maximum or a lower amount. Since your financial assistance is in the form of loans, it pays to borrow carefully and only ask for what is necessary.
  2. Submit 2021-2022 Free application for federal student aid, school code 003438 using your FSA ID. If you already have a bachelor’s degree, you will answer:
    • For the question “Diploma / Certificate”, select “2sd Licence.”
    • For the question “Current school level”, select “3rd Junior year ”.
    • When asked if you are working on a master’s or doctoral program in 2021-2022, select “NO”.
    • Parental information may be required for FAFSA if you are under 24, single, and with no dependents.
  3. The FAFSA will determine if you are a Dependent or independent student.
  4. Fill out the loan application form. You can apply for a Stafford Direct Loan only on this form. The Direct Graduate Plus Loan is not available to undergraduates. The maximum amount for dependent students is $ 7,500.00 and for independent students $ 12,500.00 per academic year.
  5. Complete the Loan Agreement (s) for Direct Unsubsidized Stafford (MPN). The loan agreement states that you will repay the loan and the interest and outlines the terms and conditions of the loan. Students who continue do not have to redo previously submitted MPNs.
  6. Complete the Entrance advice for undergraduates. This online session will explain your loan obligation and your rights and responsibilities as a student loan borrower. Students who continue do not have to redo the previously submitted admissions advice.
  7. Students in the Nursing, Dental, and Pharmacy programs can apply for a Nursing Loan or Health Professions Loan by submitting the Application for health and social services programs. Parental tax information is required for dental and pharmacy students.
  8. If you have a funding gap, consider applying for a private student loan or your parent can apply for a Parent Plus loan (dependent students only).

Graduate student Steps to apply

(Masters and PhD programs)

The financial aid office only processes graduate student loans.

All merit-based aid, such as scholarships, grants, and graduate research and teaching assistant positions, are awarded by individual university departments. Contact your college or department directly for more information on these programs.

To apply for a student loan:

  1. Review your attendance fees. Determine how much you will need for the school year. You can request a maximum or a lower amount. Since your financial assistance is in the form of loans, it pays to borrow carefully and only ask for what is necessary.
  2. Submit 2021-2022 Free application for federal student aid, school code 003438 using your FSA ID.
  3. Fill out the loan application form. Before applying for the Direct Graduate Plus loan, you must first apply for the maximum Direct Stafford Loan.
  4. Complete the Loan Agreement (s) for direct unsubsidized loans (Stafford) and Direct Graduate Plus (MPN). You must complete a separate MPN for each loan. The loan agreement states that you will repay the loan (s) and interest and outlines the terms and conditions of the loan. Students who continue do not have to redo previously submitted MPNs.
  5. Complete the Entrance advice for graduate / professional students. Students who have been denied a Direct Graduate Plus loan due to an adverse credit history may appeal or apply for the loan with an endorser and will also be required to complete Credit counseling plus. Students who continue do not have to redo the previously submitted admissions advice.
  6. Students in the Nursing, Dental, and Pharmacy programs can apply for a Nursing Loan or Health Professions Loan by submitting the Application for health and social services programs. Parental tax information is required for dental and pharmacy students. A completed HHS Master Promissory Note (MPN) is required.
