Absent father pays last child support with 80,000 cents

The family decided to turn the testy act into something positive

An American teenager has described the moment her father, whom she hadn’t seen in years, threw 80,000 pennies in the street outside her house.

Avery Sanford, 18, said she was in the middle of her class when her father arrived with a trailer full of pennies, throwing them onto his family’s lawn.

Sanford said WTVR: “My mother went out while it was happening.

“She didn’t recognize them at first. And she said, ‘What are you dumping on my lawn?’ And he said, ‘This is your last child support payment.’ And that’s when she realized who it was.

“It’s not just my mum he’s trying to embarrass, it’s also me and my sister and it’s heartbreaking that he didn’t think of that before he did,” Sanford added.

However, Sanford and her family turned the act into a positive by donating all the money to Safe Harbor, a domestic violence center.

“Turn around and give this money to mothers and children in need really turns the situation into a positive one. You can learn a lesson from that,” she said.

“It’s really hurtful and damaging to your kids when you do things like that,” she explained. “And it doesn’t matter how old your kids are. It doesn’t matter if it’s a young child or an adult. The actions of your parents will always have an effect on you.

Sanford’s father said his act was the result of 18 years of accumulated frustration and that his emotions got the better of him.

Although her daughter said the act vindicated her decision to cut ties with her father, whom she hadn’t spoken to in years.
